  • Mechanism design & development
  • Initial 3D CAD styling
  • Detail design development
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Material selection
  • Mechanical testing
  • Design right protection
  • idea realization for SFC

The AeroCatch went into production in 2005 and has sold over 150,000 units worldwide.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, with Tradewind Turbines Ltd.

Employed as Head of Mechanical Engineering by the fledgling Tradewind Turbines Ltd (from Apr 2011). Mike delivered a novel containerised deployment system for an MoD trial, from scratch in just three months. Then re-engineered a proof-of-concept prototype into a production-ready design in 10 months. The turbine has a low RPM and delivers high torque, making it suitable for both electricity generation and water pumping.

    Project activities

  • Reduced mechanical part count by 40%
  • Reduced build cost by 60%
  • Introduced design modularisation
  • Utilised agricultural engineering components
  • Substantially reduced design complexity and increased robustness
  • Designed for cost-effective manufacture
  • Generated new intellectual property
  • ideas realised for Tradewind Turbines

Specific Requirements Signage for the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Trust

Staff at the RD&E Hospital suggested that a permanent, easy to read sign at a patient's bedside would be a quicker, safer method of communicating vital information – much better than thumbing through several pages of paperwork on a bed chart.

    Product highlights

  • Unique 'daisy-chain' linkage
  • Top link fixed to bed pole
  • Hygienic, washable form
  • Full range of standard icons
  • Project activities

  • Concept design
  • Linkage design and development
  • Design for manufacture
  • Rapid prototyping
  • ideas realized for the RD&E

Carpet Protection Film Dispenser for Packexe Ltd

Client Brief: Design a value-added, cost effective dispenser unit for applying an adhesive surface protection film. Make it simple to operate and robust for harsh use in the construction industry.

Ground Anchor for Delta Ground Anchors Ltd

The clients manufacture an award-winning range of stainless steel ground anchors. They wanted to meet increasing demand and reduce manufacturing costs by introducing a new plastic anchor for light duty, general purpose application.

    Project activities

  • Design specification
  • Concept generation
  • Sketch modelling
  • 3D CAD styling
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Material selection
  • Mechanical testing
  • IP protection
  • Sub-contractor liaison
  • realized idea for Delta

The Delta Ground Anchor was voted 'Winner' in the 2011 Camping Magazine Awards.

Poppitt – automatic pill popping device for the Poppitt Company Ltd

Almost all pills and capsules are blister packed. In many pharmacies, pill trays are made up for nursing homes and other clients. On a typical day a pharmacy assistant will 'pop' hundreds of pills from these blister packs manually – a very arduous task. The clients wanted a fully automated unit that was easy to operate and worked with almost all shapes of pill packaging.

    Project activities

  • Concept development
  • Mechanism design & development
  • 3D CAD styling
  • Detail design development
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Pre-production prototypes
  • Poppitt - idea realized

This original prototype unit is now on permanent display at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in London.
